Throughout my childhood, I was perceived as an obedient daughter, strictly adhering to my mother’s expectations. This compliance resulted in my reserved nature, rendering me a timid individual who seldom questioned the directives of my parents. This state persisted until the seventh grade, during which I experienced an unfathomable transformation in my perspective on life. Prior to this pivotal moment, my peers recognized me as quiet and non-confrontational, which subsequently hindered my ability to form meaningful friendships. Despite my lack of hobbies or interests, my shyness isolated me socially.
The turning point occurred when I received my first mobile phone, which introduced me to TikTok. This platform empowered me to articulate my viewpoints and cultivate an understanding that I could not continually conform to the expectations of others. This newfound sense of freedom facilitated a long-awaited self-discovery, allowing me to transcend my shyness for the first time. In the subsequent two years, I embarked on an exploration of my identity, grappling with the choice of embracing individuality or remaining an inconspicuous member of society. During this period, I associated with individuals whom I later recognized as detrimental to my personal development. I became disillusioned upon witnessing their unkind behavior towards a classmate they disdained, prompting me to question whether I could easily become the next target. Although I felt compelled to voice my discomfort, my lingering shyness prevented me from confronting them directly, and I ultimately decided to distance myself by transferring to another school.
Upon my transfer, I discovered a passion for literature and mathematics, although the initial weeks were somewhat awkward as I adjusted to the new environment. Fortunately, I formed connections with a Chinese boy and two girls, providing me with a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Initially apprehensive about the potential for close friendship, I later expressed profound gratitude for their support. They instilled in me the courage to seek assistance when necessary, fostering my motivation to grow academically and personally. Inspired to reciprocate their encouragement, I dedicated myself to reading extensively and delving deeper into my favorite subject, mathematics.
At my new school, I learned of a dance club that required participants to pass an examination for entry. My friends were eager to join, and I, too, harbored a childhood ambition to participate. However, my ingrained shyness and self-doubt almost deterred me from pursuing this dream. Thankfully, my friends encouraged me to practice and provided guidance for mastering the required movements. I diligently rehearsed at home, determined to demonstrate that my hard work had merit.
In my final year of school, I achieved remarkable milestones, including being appointed as the Minister of Information and being recognized as the best debater. My newfound popularity was a stark contrast to my previous self-image; teachers regarded me as an exemplary student and an active participant. Overcoming my shyness enabled me to develop excellent public speaking and leadership skills. This entire journey has taught me that overcoming shyness is a valuable undertaking, as it allows individuals to express themselves freely and take decisive action in their lives.
