When discussing the internet, there will always be some contentious issues. The internet itself does not inherently require control; however, certain activities must be regulated due to their unlawful nature, such as drug trafficking, prostitution, and contract killing. For instance, unauthorized access to sensitive information has enabled groups of attackers to successfully execute plans against government structures.
In this information age, it is incredibly challenging to manage something as vast as the internet. Governments often lack the necessary human resources and financial investments. I believe the government’s role should not be to control everything, as the internet is fundamentally about freedom of thought and cultural exchange. It allows individuals to share their opinions without fear of persecution for differing views.
If governments were given the power to control the internet, it would cease to be the familiar environment we know today. Countries could assert dominance in the political sphere, as a controlled internet would serve as a tool for propaganda. A prime example of this is China, which utilizes the internet to block and restrict the influx of Western influence. By regulating online content, the government can stifle dissenting voices and suppress opposition.
In my opinion, control should exist within reasonable limits. An unchecked internet can lead to unpredictability and anarchy, where individuals may easily fall victim to organized crime. In conclusion, I believe that every nation should impose some level of control over the internet to protect communities from severe criminal activities. Striking a balance—reasonable control—is key to ensuring a high-quality internet experience.
