In the modern world, recent years have witnessed a significant reduction in the number of young generation engaging with reading books. This phenomenon is presumably a result of two possible driving factors: social media and hectic lifestyle which in turn may lead to a lower literacy and weak cognitive abilities.

Social media is a notable and obvious reason that is making many teenagers less connected with reading books. Although people have a free time to at least look through the book, they prefer to switch on their phones and start scrolling. This happens among many young people worldwide because they have addiction to scrolling. Another contributing factor for this negative development is a hectic lifestyle where individuals live with strict deadlines and family responsibilities. After finishing a heavy day, all a person is able to do is sleeping and this clearly illustrates that even if one wants to read at least 2 pages before bad struggles and finds it hard.

Not being able to read regularly may drive to major negative outcomes: lower literacy rates for example, which plays crucial role in human life. When a person does not have basic-literacy or life-skills, even simple tasks seem hard to finish. For instance, one famous write stated that decision making skills are mastered by reading detective genre books or even dramas can help people acquire simple life-skills.

With regard to another result, cognitive abilities may be affected and lose its fundamental skills like fast reading, scanning or skimming for the information. These skills play significant role in job market as a productive employee with these abilities are valued by HR.

To sum up, in this fast phase of life many adolescences are not engaging with reading books. Social media and hectic lifestyle contributed to this negative development and it also comes with unavoidable impacts: Lower literacy and weak cognitive abilities.
