Band 7+: Housing is a basic necessity for everyone. Therefore, government should provide free housing for people who cannot afford to pay it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Having a secure place to live is a fundamental human need. For this reason, the government should provide free housing to those who cannot afford it. I completely agree with this assertion, as free housing reduces social inequality and benefits the economy.

There are some reasons why people may disagree with this statement. The first reason is that it encourages dependency on government. If people receive housing for free, it could discourage self-sufficiency. This may lower work motivation and create dependency on government aid. Apart from this, some argue that providing free housing is not practical due to limited government resources and competing priorities. Governments, clearly, have limited resources, and providing free housing for all in need may not be possible. Governments also need to improve healthcare, education, and employment opportunities so there might not be enough money to spend on providing those in need with housing. Critics argue that limited government funds should be prioritized for healthcare, education, and job creation instead of housing.

Despite these concerns, I strongly believe that free housing is beneficial. Firstly, it reduces social inequality. A lack of affordable housing often deepens the gap between the rich and the poor. By providing free housing, the government ensures that poor individuals have a chance to have a better life. This, in turn, can also allow people to focus on personal and professional growth rather than struggling to afford rent. Another key reason is the economic benefits it brings. Stable housing allows people to find and keep jobs, increasing their contribution to the economy. It also leads to better education opportunities, as children from homeless backgrounds often struggle academically.

In conclusion, while the government providing free housing for poor people can be seen in a negative light, I firmly believe that the government should provide free housing to those in need, as it helps bridge the wealth gap and fosters long-term economic growth.
