Running a family business is something common in several countries. It has been argued that this is the most effective way to run a business whilst others disagree about that.
Some families established their successful business years ago, and they want to keep it running by someone from the family itself. I think the reason for that is a family member is the best one who will care about keeping the business running and will want to scale it. Some families start teaching their children about their family business at an early age so they will get prepared to work in that field when they grow up. Moreover, a few parents push their children to specialise in their field of study to continue operating their businesses later for example, a doctor has a clinic or a hospital he wants his child to be a doctor thinking that is the best choice for the child as a job is already there for the kid.
In my opinion, there are too many examples in the market for businesses run by families for decades and that could be a good idea. However, a job is not something that can be inherited from a parent to a child and, the consequences of that can be harmful to the business and the person as it should be a choice from the person himself. If someone is forced to do a certain job he can’t be productive which can fail in that field or the business will shut down.
To sum up, a family managing a business for a long time could be a good idea only if all people who will be engaged in that business are having a passion for that. Otherwise, that can be a problem for the business and the person who will fail and has no choice but to do what he asked to do.
