In recent years, food waste has increasingly become a global concern with significant amounts of food being thrown away from restaurants and shops. This essay will examine the main reasons behind the issue and suggest some practical measures to reduce it.
There are several reasons why people waste substantial amounts of food. Firstly, restaurants and shops often provide food in portions that are too large, causing customers to leave uneaten food on their plates. For instance, when I traveled to Hong Kong, all meals were served with substantial quantities of rice, and I could only finish half of them. Secondly, many individuals still lack awareness of the consequences of wasted food, so they do not take steps to avoid it. Furthermore, even if some are aware, they may not feel personally responsible for the problem.
To reduce food waste, there are several measures that can be taken by both private and public sectors. Businesses could offer smaller or medium-sized portions, giving customers the option to order only what they can finish. A good example would be a canteen at my college, where all the food stalls sell food in three portions (small, medium, and large), resulting in minimization of food leftovers. Moreover, governments and organizations could run awareness campaigns to educate the public about the negative impacts of discarded food, such as campaigns highlighting how food waste contributes to environmental pollution.
To sum up, food waste is primarily caused by oversized portions in restaurants as well as lack of awareness about its consequences. To handle this problem, businesses could offer smaller sizes and governments could run promotional campaigns to highlight its negative impact. Only by combining these approaches, food waste can be significantly reduced.
