Recently, a myriad of academic instiutions has tended to adopt STEM subjects and prefer them over arts courses. The goal of this essay is to elaborate on the causes of this trend, focusing on the impact of these subjects on developing new technological advancements. However, I believe that both fields contribute to fostering intellectual development and learning essential skills.
On the one hand, learning STEM subjects plays a vital role in promoting technological progress and enhancing economic growth. In other words, when schools pay greater attention to teaching science and mathematics, individuals are able to pursue careers in medicine and engineering, which are in high demand globally. For example, various developed countries, such as the United States and Germany, have invested heavily in STEM courses, ultimately leading to both technological breakthroughs that serve the globe and the creation of new treatments for deadly diseases, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and cancer. Thus, not only does learning science and mathematics create prestigious employment opportunities, but it also contributes to serving humanity.
Furthermore, engaging in arts develops creativity and cultural enrichment. To clarify, if children are not exposed to subjects such as drama and literature, they will not be able to express themselves, understand others, and appreciate their heritage and customs. To illustrate, numerous studies conducted by Egyptian human resources experts have shown that, over the last ten years, students focusing only on STEM academic disciplines, rather than arts subjects, often lack essential skills such as creativity, deep thinking, and communication and problem-solving skills. Therefore, maintaining a balance is crucial for both personal and cultural growth.
In conclusion, despite some opinions in favor of the idea that education systems should focus solely on teaching science and mathematics, I do not believe that this is an optimal solution. Consequently, I firmly contend that both fields of study are crucial, as they contribute to technological developments, in addition to enabling people to explore various cultures, appreciate their history, and broaden their horizons.
