There is a controversial and ongoing idea that while museums and historical monuments are visited only by tourists and foreigners, local people do not have any willingness to see these places. From my point of view, multifaceted factors have profoundly contributed to this trend, and in this essay, I will evaluate and explain them in detail, as well as how to encourage local inhabitants to have civic engagement with cultural heritage.
To begin with, in modern life, there are primary reasons attributing to the preponderance of visitors in museums and historical sites while locals do not tend to do so. Some of the local historical sites are not interesting for locals owing to the long-term familiarity, meaning that they have nothing new to offer. Besides, these museums are extremely common and ordinary for local people because they already have a lot of information regarding the items that exist there, unlike people who are from other nations, for whom these items are increasingly attractive. Needless to say, one of the most important factors playing a significant role in this attitude is that either the price of tickets to these exhibits is exorbitant, or access to these sites is difficult and time-consuming. Another major point regarding this issue is that such disengagement is rooted in overlooking these sites because of the ample opportunities local individuals assume wrongly they have to visit at a later time, leading to a decline in local interest.
However, nowadays, one of the most imperative issues that must be addressed by governments and authorities is to draw the citizens’ attention to preserve their local history and identity. In addition, one of the most constructive actions is to invest more in the educational system, encourage students to be interested in their history and culture, and foster a deeper connection between them. Moreover, policymakers can set some laws to reduce the charges of some places, such as exhibitions, for locals to provide an affordable conditions.
In conclusion, whereas the predominance of travelers in museums and historical locations overshadows local attendance, it is crucial to consider the underlying reasons by improving the educational basis to foster a renewed appreciation for the historical surroundings and providing suitable circumstances in which everyone can afford and attend. Consequently, these actions can help preserve cultural heritage and increase community engagement.
