Band 8+: **Many people argue that in order to improve educational quality, high school students should be encouraged to question and offer criticisms on their teachers. Others think this will lead to a loss of respect and discipline in the classroom.** **Discuss both views and give your own opinion.**

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

A certain number of people assert that high school students should comment and criticize their teachers, so that the educational quality can increase, while others believe that it predictably leads to a decline in respect and discipline in the classroom. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting my own view.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that encouraging students to review their teachers’ work may bear some positive aspects. To begin with, this action can enhance teachers’ skills and improve their understanding of pupils’ needs. Moreover, it can be helpful for teachers to tailor effective strategies for each individual, maximizing their talents. For instance, in Vietnam, at the end of every semester, the school council surveys students about various questions, including a section for any complaints or comments about their teachers. This feedback can foster a cooperative relationship between teachers and students. However, there is a risk that some students might misuse the opportunity for open communication to disrespect and ridicule their teachers. For instance, students who lack discipline or maturity might use this platform to undermine the teacher’s authority, leading to a disruptive classroom environment. This concern is often depicted in Western media, where the portrayal of such scenarios highlights the potential for disrespect and disorder.

Despite the benefits, the drawbacks of student reviews are concerning. Firstly, teachers’ authority may be undermined, bringing them down to the same level as their students. This erosion of authority can be attributed to students’ egos, as they may refuse to listen to their teachers. For example, pupils engaged in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs may distrust their teachers, leading to frequent debates in the classroom. While this can foster students’ confidence, it can also disrupt the hierarchy and order in the classroom, ultimately resulting in a culture where students no longer show respect to their teachers.

In conclusion, while reviewing teachers’ work can streamline and improve the educational process, I firmly support the view that it can create a culture where students’ words carry more weight than those of their teachers, thereby diminishing mutual respect and discipline.
