Positive And Negative

Band 6+: Many supermarkets are selling more and more products that are imported from other countries instead of selling food that is locally sourced. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, it is common for supermarkets to sell imported food rather than domestically grown products. This is happening due to demand for exotic foods and higher profit margins for sellers. I am of the opinion that it is a bad thing as it hurts local farmers and environment.

The first and foremost reason for importing products from abroad is the demand of foreign foods. This is because, imported products are generally considered to be of higher quality which makes consumers to choose them over the local grown foods. Furthermore, these products also add variety making them more appealing for customers to buy. For example, exotic fruits and vegetables such as, pink lady apples are very popular in India and are preferred by lots of customers although they are more expensive than regular ones.

Another clear reason for this trend is the higher profit margins for supermarket owners. This means, the profits from selling imported food products are higher than local grown ones. Therefore, these items are promoted by sellers by different advertisements and offers to attract potential customers into buying these products. For instance, various international coffee brands are promoted by companies for their better and quality even though they are significantly expensive than domestic brands.

I am of the opinion that importing foreign products has various negative impacts such as, hurting the livelihood of local farmers. Sometimes, if imported food is cheaper than locally grown food, it will attract more customers, affecting the revenue of farmers. Moreover, it also has negative impacts on environment. When food is transported to other countries, huge amounts of fuel is burnt which increases pollution.

In conclusion, supermarkets are selling imported food because of the variety that they offer; however, it not only affects the local farmers but also the environment as well.
