Band 7+: more and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people think a solution can be to increase the price of fattening foods . to what extent do you agree or disagree?

In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, it is becoming common for many people to be overweight. While some argue that the more fattening foods are overpriced, the less people become fattened, I personally contend that there are also other productive solutions to mitigate this issue.

For one thing, it is true that when the cost of convenient foods is maximized, it reduces the lik elihood of consuming such foods among people. Regulating the diet of people by using marketing techniques can be eff icient since some people do not even bother to try expensive things. Nevertheless, overpricing junk foods might not completely prevent people from consuming such foods, even though it reduces the frequency. For instance, if a person is given two options about eating either soup with less fattening nutrients or a burger with excessive fat, he or she is more likely to prefer the latter because such foods usually look more mouth-watering and delicious, which people can not reject. Therefore, although increasing the price of fattening foods can be effective to a certain extent, it is not the most effective solution as people have already been heavily dep endent on fast food owing to its time-e fficiency and taste.

Instead, there are more effective ways of encouraging people to follow a healthy diet and stay in good shape. One compelling example is the incorporation of outdoor activities. People nowadays are becoming too reliant on vehicles, which contrib utes to a less physically active lifestyle. However, when the government ins pires people to participate in regular outdoor activities, such as jogging or swimming, people can stay fit and well-shaped. In order to establish such a n active life, more investment is required in local gyms, gardens, playing fields and sports co mpetitions among residents with rewards. Another root con tributor to more fat people is often the lack of awareness of people about th e long-term consequences of excessive junk food consumption. If people we re aware of how fattening foods can cause serious chronic diseases, such as obesity and heart-related illnesses, they would have already stopped eating such foods. Hence, improving promotions about how fattening food can harm people can be more effi cient in comparison with increasing the costs.

Ultimately, although maxim ization of fattening foods’ prices can deter people from eating unhealthy food t o some ex tent, I think there are more effective solutions to address this issue, such as enhancing sports and public awareness of fast foods’ consequences in the long run.
