Band 9: Nowadays food has become easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s fast-paced world, the preparation of food has become significantly easier due to technological advancements and modern cooking methods. While this change has provided numerous benefits for people’s lifestyles, it has also introduced some negative consequences. This essay will discuss both the positive and negative effects of this development.

Firstly, food becoming easier to prepare has given people more spare time for various activities. Instead of spending hours cooking, individuals can now focus on entertainment, education, work, or hobbies. This change leads to a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle, where people can invest more time in their personal development and relaxation without worrying about preparing complicated meals. Secondly, easier preparation has enabled individuals to control their diet more effectively. Modern kitchen appliances often provide calorie counts and nutritional information, helping people manage their food intake carefully. By being aware of the calories they consume, individuals can maintain a healthier lifestyle, prevent overeating, and achieve their fitness goals without relying heavily on external diet plans or constant supervision. Thirdly, the ability to cook quickly and easily at home reduces dependency on fast food shops and restaurants. In the past, people would often buy ready-made food due to the complexity of cooking. Now, with simple recipes and appliances, individuals can prepare fresh meals themselves, saving money and eating healthier options without needing to eat outside frequently. Finally, easier food preparation has contributed to environmental preservation. In earlier times, cooking required the burning of logs and wood, leading to deforestation and air pollution. Today, electrical or gas appliances have significantly reduced the need for firewood, helping to conserve forests and improve air quality, which benefits both humans and the planet.

However, despite the advantages, some negative outcomes have emerged. One drawback is that modern meals have become less tasty compared to traditional ones. The richness of flavours, slow cooking methods, and the personal touch added by traditional cooking are often missing in fast-prepared dishes, making eating less enjoyable for many people who value taste and authenticity. Moreover, the convenience of processed and fast foods has introduced serious health concerns. These foods tend to have higher fat and salt content, along with less fibre, which contributes to various diseases. Increased consumption of such meals has led to a spike in obesity, hypertension, and cardiovascular illnesses, especially in countries where processed food dominates the market. For instance, the United States has witnessed rising heart disease rates linked to fast food culture.

In conclusion, while easier food preparation has improved people’s lifestyles by saving time, enabling dietary control, reducing dependence on restaurants, and benefiting the environment, it has also brought problems such as lower food quality and serious health risks. Therefore, people should balance convenience with conscious choices to maintain both health and enjoyment.
