For the best part of the last thirty years, the popularity of bicycles as transportation means have been dropped rapidly. While cycling is one of the best physical exercises, people prefer other forms of transportation, such as cars, motors, and buses.
There are main reasons behind this trend, such as the technological improvements of such vehicles, the reduction of their purchasing and ownership costs, and the safety issues related to cycling in large cities. On the one hand, modern cars and motorcycles offer new systems, like ABS, ESP, autopilot, etc., making driving much easier. On the other hand, the automation of the production lines of such vehicles, for instance in car factories, reduces their production costs. Furthermore, the traffic in city centers and the large number of cars may be an extra barrier. For instance, one may not be confident about cycling in an urban environment due to the increased possibility of accidents.
Since bicycles as a form of transport have a wide range of benefits for the citizens, such as the reduction of carbon emissions or positive influence on public health, we need to raise awareness of them. Introducing roads only for bicycles will increase the utilization of bicycles. Moreover, bike renting services will help by allowing anyone to ride a bike even if he does not own one. Lastly, campaigns from public authorities can improve awareness about the gains of cycling in public health and environmental neutrality.
To this end, people select other transportation means rather than bicycles, due to safety reasons and relatively low cost. In order for people to minimize the use of such vehicles and utilize bicycles, governments should disseminate the benefits of their usage to individuals and the public.
