Band 9: Nowadays, there is a trend that reports of media focus on problems and emergencies rather than positive development. Some people think that it is harmful to individuals and society. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

In contemporary society, individuals are inundated with a vast array of information from various social media platforms. A significant proportion of this news predominantly highlights adverse issues rather than acknowledging positive advancements. Many argue that this trend has detrimental effects, not only on individuals but also on society as a whole. I firmly concur with the view that an overemphasis on negative reporting can inflict harm on both personal well-being and communal cohesion.

To elaborate, the prevalence of negative news can cultivate a pessimistic outlook on life. As individuals are bombarded daily with troubling reports across multiple channels, their perception of reality may become distorted. Prolonged exposure to such deleterious information can foster a pervasive sense of fear and anxiety, prompting individuals to withdraw from social interactions. This trend of isolation can stifle communal engagement and undermine collective progress, ultimately hindering national development and prosperity.

Furthermore, an incessant focus on negative events can serve as a precursor to societal unrest, including acts of potential terrorism. When individuals are frequently confronted with narratives portraying a deteriorating societal landscape, they may come to view their environment as fundamentally flawed, leading to disenchantment with governmental institutions. For instance, throughout the tumultuous period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the media’s relentless coverage of rising case numbers and fatalities contributed to widespread despondency. Many citizens perceived the government’s efforts as inadequate, which potentially spurred civil discontent and protests against perceived shortcomings in crisis management.

In conclusion, I maintain that the predominance of negative news adversely affects both individuals and society at large. Therefore, it is imperative for consumers of information to exercise discernment in selecting the content they engage with and to approach news reports with a critical mindset, considering both positive and negative dimensions. By doing so, we can mitigate the harmful effects of negative reporting and foster a more balanced perspective on societal developments.
