In today’s world, inhabitants can use the internet to learn about the lives and cultures of different countries; however, I strongly disagree with the notion that this eliminates the need to travel. Experiencing travel in real life allows us to engage with and understand different cultures on a deeper level. Additionally, traveling offers opportunities to connect with people from other nations in a way that the internet simply cannot provide.
Learning about international cultures through social media does not offer the same richness of experience as traveling does. Searching for information online can often feel tedious, and without real-life experiences, the information can easily fade from memory. People who rely solely on the internet to explore other cultures miss out on the emotions that come with seeing iconic places firsthand. For instance, when I visited the United Arab Emirates, my prior research on social media failed to capture the true essence of the culture. The online portrayals were different from the actual experiences I encountered. Traveling allowed me to feel emotions I had never felt before, such as the fear of getting lost in a foreign country.
Moreover, traveling provides a unique opportunity for face-to-face interactions with international citizens, allowing us to learn about their cultures firsthand. These golden moments can only be experienced while traveling, as living in one’s own country often limits connections to a single culture. Since we all inhabit diverse regions of the world, experiencing travel opens doors to understanding the distinct ways of life of others. It allows us to partake in national festivals or traditional celebrations, gaining insights that often aren’t available online. For example, participating in Holi, the famous festival in India, would enable you to engage with local people, learn about the festivities, dance alongside them, and truly feel like a part of the Indian culture – an experience that surpasses mere observation on a smartphone.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that while the internet and social media can provide valuable information about international cultures and lifestyles, they cannot replace the profound experiences gained from travel. Traveling allows us to encounter new emotions, build meaningful connections, and engage with the world in ways that digital platforms simply cannot replicate.
