Plagiarism, historically prevalent in various domains such as the entertainment industry and the workplace, has now assumed alarming proportions within the educational realm. It is widely perceived as a pressing concern due to its harmful effects. The practice of plagiarism manifests in several forms, with the most seen being the replication of content from the internet without acknowledgment and the act of paraphrasing without proper attribution. Although plagiarism does not considered a criminal offense, educational institutions have prohibited this conduct, stating it essential to recognize and respect the intellectual contributions of others. Plagiarism often occurs when individuals seek to claim credit for the work of others. However, its root causes extend beyond mere cheating, underdeveloped scholarly capabilities, intellectual insecurity, lacking argumentation, lack of critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as inferior writing skills.

To reduce the habit of plagiarism, a proactive approach involving the learning and application of good academic principles from the start of one’s educational journey is essential. Merely replacing words in copied text to conceal illicit borrowing is not an effective strategy, rather, there is a need to enhance academic skills to elevate one’s work. Furthermore, increasing one’s knowledge through extensive reading and training writing abilities are essential measures to prevent plagiarism. Concurrently, crediting the original authors in the reference list is an important aspect of upholding academic integrity.

In conclusion, while not constituting a civil offense, it is better to avoid it. It is necessary upon individuals to boost their academic proficiencies as a means to prevent plagiarism. Additionally, mentioning authors in reference lists is compulsory to the preservation of academic integrity.
