Band 7+: Question: More and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people say that the price increase of flattening foods will solve this problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rising rates of obesity have become a problematic issue worldwide, with many people struggling to maintain a healthy weight. Some suggest that increasing the prices of processed and unhealthy foods would be an effective approach to combat this problem. I believe this cannot be a complete solution to address this complex matter, which has other causes.

One argument in favor of raising the costs of fattening foods is that it could reduce the consumption of them. According to economic theory, if prices go up, the demand for these products decreases. As a result, this could be true for unhealthy foods. However, this is not the normal situation for all; people who live and work busy lifestyles always have to purchase high-calorie food alternatives to save time despite their costs. Furthermore, this would disproportionately affect people who have low incomes. Therefore, the high costs of fattening foods would not always fully tackle this problem, which requires complex solutions.

From my perspective, there are several factors leading to obesity besides price. Firstly, most people do not really realize how poor dietary habits affect their lives. Thus, the government should encourage awareness of the consequences of this problem on social media and in ads. As a result, this will increase the making of right choices among people. Moreover, people’s sedentary lifestyles are a second reason why they suffer from obesity. In order to attract them to active lifestyles, rewarding competitions such as running marathons and neighborhood jogs are the best way to avoid being overweight.

In conclusion, increasing the prices of fattening foods could be only one solution for some people, while obesity depends on various reasons. In my opinion, people should be aware of the effects of bad eating habits and be encouraged to active lifestyles to solve this matter.
