Parents of every child are always concerned about providing the best possible education for their children. While many parents believe that learning mathematics at school is essential, others hold a contrasting view. In this essay, I will explore both perspectives and present my own opinion.
In contemporary society, parents are increasingly focused on ensuring their children have a positive and enjoyable learning experience, and they are concerned that difficult subjects, such as mathematics, may hinder their children’s academic and personal development. Some parents argue that mathematics is an unnecessary subject in the school curriculum and should be eliminated. For example, they may argue that for a young person aspiring to become a successful football player, their ability to score in a game holds far more significance than their proficiency in calculus.
Conversely, individuals who have not been introduced to basic algebra may encounter challenges in conducting everyday transactions and may be susceptible to being deceived by others. Moreover, the modern world heavily relies on online transactions, and careless financial decisions due to a lack of mathematical knowledge can lead to significant problems. For example, when making a purchase, individuals need to be able to calculate discounts and assess offers, and those lacking basic mathematical skills may experience regret for not having acquired this knowledge.
In conclusion, while a child can potentially succeed in their chosen career path with or without proficiency in algebra, a foundational understanding of mathematics can prevent individuals from being misled and can be beneficial in various real-life situations. Therefore, in my opinion, mathematics should continue to be upheld as a fundamental subject in the field of education.
