Band 8+: Some people believe that children should be taught to be competitive in school, while others think they should be taught to cooperate. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The two perspectives on education highlight different mindsets within the school system. One emphasizes a competitive approach, while the other focuses on fostering friendliness and cooperation. It is important to consider that various aspects of the school system—such as the learning environment, the school community, the behavior of students, and the role of teachers—can indirectly impact a child’s development. Each of these factors plays a crucial role in shaping how students approach their education and interact with others.

Encouraging a competitive mindset in schools can certainly motivate children to study harder and acquire the knowledge necessary for their academic progress. This mindset is valuable in helping students strive for excellence. However, there are notable drawbacks to this approach. A focus on competition can lead to the development of arrogance and self-centered behavior, which may negatively impact students’ relationships with their peers. Therefore, it is essential to balance competition with cooperation in order to foster both academic achievement and positive social interactions.

On the other hand, cooperation offers significant advantages. It is essential for children to ask for help and offer assistance when needed in order to foster mutual learning. I believe both competition and cooperation have their merits, but I personally lean toward promoting a more cooperative and helpful mindset. Therefore, a balance between both approaches would be ideal. By combining a cooperative attitude with a healthy level of competition, students can achieve the best of both worlds—enhancing personal growth, academic achievement, and social development. This approach not only supports the child’s educational journey but also encourages the sharing of knowledge in a positive and collaborative way.

In conclusion, children should not be taught a fixed mindset in schools. Instead, they should have the freedom to choose an approach that suits their individual needs. One perspective encourages competitiveness and a strict focus on academic achievement, while the other emphasizes friendliness and cooperation with others. In my opinion, a balanced mindset that combines both competitiveness and cooperation is the most ideal. This approach allows students to thrive academically while also developing essential social skills, fostering an environment that supports both personal and collective growth.
