Band 8+: Some people believe that e-books are replacing traditional printed books. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, electronic books have become increasingly popular due to technological advancements. While many people believe that traditional printed books are superior to e-books, I partially agree with this view because printed books offer a unique reading experience, although e-books provide greater convenience and accessibility.

On the one hand, traditional books have several advantages that cannot easily be replaced by digital versions. Firstly, many readers enjoy the physical experience of holding a book, turning its pages, and even smelling the paper. This sensory experience often makes reading more enjoyable and memorable. Secondly, printed books do not require batteries or electronic devices, allowing people to read anywhere without worrying about charging their gadgets. Moreover, studies suggest that readers often concentrate better and retain information more effectively when reading from paper rather than from screens, which can cause eye strain and distractions.

On the other hand, e-books offer numerous benefits in today’s fast-paced world. One significant advantage is their convenience. A single electronic device can store thousands of books, making it easier for students and travellers to carry a large library wherever they go. In addition, e-books are usually cheaper than printed books because there are no printing or transportation costs involved. They also provide useful features such as adjustable font sizes, built-in dictionaries, and text-search functions, which can greatly improve the reading experience, especially for language learners and people with visual impairments.

In conclusion, although traditional books provide a more enjoyable and focused reading experience, I believe that e-books are equally valuable because of their practicality and accessibility. Therefore, neither format is entirely superior; instead, both have their own strengths and can coexist in modern society.
