Band 8+: Some people believe that excessive use of modern technologies, such as computers and smartphones, is negatively affecting the reading and writing skills of our young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people believe that the excessive use of modern technologies, such as computers and smartphones, is negatively affecting the reading and writing skills of young people. I largely agree with this view, although I believe technology itself is not the main problem; rather, it is how it is used.

One major reason why heavy reliance on digital devices can harm reading skills is the decline in sustained attention. Young people increasingly consume short texts such as social media posts, messages, and notifications, which discourages deep and focused reading. As a result, many struggle to engage with longer academic texts, novels, or analytical material. In addition, constant multitasking on digital platforms reduces concentration, making it harder to develop critical reading and comprehension skills.

Writing skills are also affected by the overuse of technology. Informal communication through texting and social media encourages abbreviations, emojis, and poor grammar, which can transfer into academic or professional writing. Furthermore, tools such as autocorrect and predictive text reduce the need for users to actively think about spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary, limiting the development of strong writing abilities among young people.

However, it would be misleading to claim that technology is entirely harmful. When used appropriately, digital tools can enhance reading and writing skills. E-books, online journals, and educational platforms provide access to a vast range of reading materials, while word-processing software allows students to draft, edit, and improve their writing efficiently. Therefore, technology can support literacy development if guided by teachers and parents.

In conclusion, I agree to a large extent that excessive and unguided use of modern technology negatively affects the reading and writing skills of young people. Nevertheless, with proper supervision and balanced usage, technology can also play a positive role in strengthening these essential skills.
