Band 7+: Some people believe that tourism promotes the economy while other argue that tourism destroy the environment. Discuss both views.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the modern era, the tourism industry has emerged as a crucial sector on a global scale. There is a debate among individuals about this industry, with some contending that tourism significantly contributes to the economy, while others argue that it leads to environmental harm. This essay seeks to explore both perspectives before offering a well-rounded viewpoint.

On one aspect, it is noteworthy to mention that tourism plays a substantial role in the economic progress of a country. For instance, a significant number of tourists visit different destinations to experience the local culture and natural beauty, thereby spending money on lodging, meals, and transport. Furthermore, this thriving industry creates employment opportunities for the local population. For example, a study by The Daily Star Newspaper in 2022 indicated a notable decrease in unemployment rates in tourist areas such as Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, with only 10% unemployment reported. A decade ago, the unemployment rate stood at 65% due to the lack of job prospects. Thus, it is apparent that the tourism sector not only fosters economic development but also augments employment levels.

On the other hand, critics argue that tourism can have detrimental impacts on the environment. The extensive use of transport by tourists can lead to carbon emissions, resulting in air pollution. Additionally, the rapid growth of tourist infrastructure often leads to habitat destruction and deforestation. Research carried out by Sara Khan, a psychology professor at Dhaka University, revealed that numerous trees were cut down by logging companies to construct hotels and motels for tourists at the destination. Furthermore, tourists sometimes disregard environmental regulations, causing damage to the natural elements of the tourist site instead of conserving them.

In conclusion, notwithstanding the potential drawbacks, tourism has the potential to drive economic growth through its attractive features. Simultaneously, environmental issues can be tackled through government interventions and by raising awareness among tourists. By achieving a balance between economic advantages and environmental preservation, sustainable tourism practices can be adopted to mitigate the negative impacts of tourism on the environment.
