Some people claim that by having native teachers teach English, the quality of English education in Vietnam will enhance. I strongly agree with this view for two main reasons, which will be further discussed below.
Firstly, the main reason why native English teachers should teach English in Vietnam is that they can help students with pronunciation. A major reason why many students are reluctant to use English for communication is the fear of pronouncing words wrongly. Unlike Vietnamese teachers who imitate how native speakers pronounce, native teachers have correct pronunciation. This allows them to instruct students how to pronounce words correctly or fix their mistakes. With regular practice and timely feedback from these teachers, students’ pronunciation will gradually improve.
Secondly, studying English with native teachers is essential for natural language usage. Vietnamese students often fall into the trap of memorizing words and their definitions instead of learning how to use them in conversations. Native teachers use English in everyday life, so they are familiar with the common expressions, idioms, collocations that make conversations sound authentic. Thanks to the guidance from these English-speaking teachers, students can learn how to use the language effectively in certain situations. As a result, their English will not only be correct but also sound natural.
To sum up, I strongly support the employment of native teachers to teach English because they can greatly improve the quality of English education by correcting pronunciation and teaching natural language usage. In my opinion, schools should actively seek ways to recruit native teachers to help students learn English more efficiently.
