Band 8+: Some people think that in the modern world we are more dependent on each other, while others think that people have become more independent.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is a subject of widespread debate in contemporary society whether individuals are more interdependent on each other or have achieved greater independence. Personally, I am of the opinion that we are currently living in a more autonomous manner than ever before.

Numerous individuals argue that there is a growing tendency to depend on others due to the complexities and challenges of modern life. Firstly, financial constraints often compel young couples in countries like Iran to reside with their parents after marriage, as they are unable to afford their own accommodation amidst escalating housing costs. Consequently, this enables them to save money towards the eventual purchase of a house, thereby ensuring a more secure future for their offspring. Secondly, the demanding nature of modern-day employment leaves individuals in need of substantial support from their peers. For instance, my brother and sister-in-law are frequently required to work overtime, which prevents them from being able to collect their children promptly at 5 pm. Consequently, my father assists them by ensuring the safe transportation of their offspring back home on a daily basis.

Conversely, it is apparent to me that contemporary society is witnessing a surge in individual autonomy. A growing number of people choose to establish their residence in distant locations, necessitating the resolution of their own challenges without reliance on familial support. For instance, in the United States, young adults typically leave their parental homes upon reaching the age of 18, thereby embarking on an independent life characterized by the pursuit of personal aspirations and extensive travel opportunities. Furthermore, advancements in technology have enabled individuals to engage in solitary work activities from any corner of the globe. With the aid of a laptop and an internet connection, individuals can effortlessly conduct online conferences, eliminating the need for secretarial assistance in organizing meeting spaces or preparing presentation materials.

In conclusion, while a considerable portion of the populace believes that our reliance on others has intensified, I maintain the perspective that advances in technology coupled with the evolving lifestyle of the younger generation have indeed fostered a greater sense of independence among individuals.
