While some individuals believe that people should spend their leisure time on useful activities that aim to improve intellectual abilities, others hold an opposite view. In this essay I will discuss both perspectives and explain why I believe that the former statement is more justified.
On the one hand, It is obvious that the human brain needs a rest in order to function properly. The human brain works unstoppably, which means that billions of nerve signals are produced every second. Therefore, resting activities, including sleeping, that do not require any brain involvement may be helpful for recovering. If a person neglects having a proper rest, it will probably lead to numerous neurogenetic disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
On the other hand, spending some leisure time engaged in useful activities can be beneficial as well. First of all, reading a book or doing word puzzles can improve one’s ability to think critically. Such activities usually require a person to evaluate, analyse and solve logical tasks. As a result, they can train people to find an appropriate solution in any challenging life situation. Furthermore, practicing activities that involve brain activity can enhance one’s proficiency in focusing on long-term tasks. Since patient people are highly valued in many workplaces, they have a higher chance for promotion to higher positions.
To conclude, despite the fact that some people underestimate the benefits of mind-improving activities, I strongly disagree with them. Not only do such tasks boost one’s critical thinking, but they also strengthen concentration skills.
