In order to achieve success in sport, some views argue that it is more crucial to be strong physically compared to be mentally. While others show their opposite comments contrary to the above point of view. In this essay, I will analyse both views and give my stance on which is more important.
On the one hand, according to the conventional mindset, almost all people choose to pursue sports and are passionate about success in this field, they are considered to be strong physically because sports require participants to spend a large amount of time training and practising; therefore, they will easily be exhausted and lost entire their energy. Obvious examples are sports such as weightlifting, boxing and judo. Or some sports stars, such as the world-famous professional cyclist Lance Armstrong, have even used illegal substances, like performance-enhancing drugs, in order to reach and maintain top physical condition, risking their careers.
On the other hand, mental strength must be regared as the basis of all success in sports, especially for those who want to achieve high-level status in this profession. All sports trainers recognise the necessity of a strong mental attitude. First of all, if trainers cannot foster a competitive spirit or even a win-at-all-costs attitude, the sportspeople who they train may lack the motivation to work hard and succeed. They have to make up their mind that in any field, they can fail or be disappointed so if they do not prepare carefully their mindset they easily give up and do not follow the right path to overcome all harsh conditions and achieve success. In particular, in the world of professional sports, where news coverage places too much value on sports, it is impossible to have a laid-back attitude and still succeed. For instance, take Michael Jordan as an example, this Goat of basketball failed miserably before he made it to the top. In fact, in high school, at 5 feet 11 inches, he was deemed too short for the school team and his coach even stated that he lacked the skills and fitness of a real basketball player. However, he did not stop and give up his passion and started to begin an intense training program the very next day and generate history.
My opinion, I highly appreciate mental strength because it turns out that many shining examples who have succeeded in sports such as Michael Jordan mentioned above to empathize that all success made by as strong mental health not only by power from physical strength.
In conclusion, both physical and mental strength are indispensable parts of becoming successful in sport, but it is impossible to succeed without a coherent strategy and perseverance in mindset.
