It is widely acknowledged that road safety is a prevalent issue that causes more and more deaths each year. Some believe that increasing the legal driving age is the best way to decrease accidents and enhance safety. While I agree with this view to some extent, I believe it is not sufficient to tackle this global problem.
Raising the age limit for legally obtaining a driver’s license may reduce the number of potential accidents caused by drivers on the road, which threaten human well-being. Many young drivers, particularly those between the ages of 18 and 26, tend to be impulsive and make quick decisions. Due to these characteristics, the level of fatalities from accidents continues to rise year after year. By increasing the minimum age for legal driving, governments can help create calmer roads, as drivers are likely to be more mature after the age of 25. Germany serves as a perfect example of this approach, as they have implemented strict rules regarding the legal driving age to improve road safety, resulting in one of the lowest accident rates in the world.
However, merely raising the driving age is not enough to completely address this issue. There will always be a certain number of young drivers who pose a threat to themselves and others by breaking the rules associated with legal driving. Specifically, many individuals who are passionate about speed and the thrill of driving often disregard traffic laws, even when they are aware of potential fines and penalties. I believe that governments should enforce stricter penalties for rule violations, which would discourage individuals from reoffending after their first infraction. For instance, in Uzbekistan, the government introduced a fine of 10 million for running a red light. Approximately two months after the law was enacted, compliance with road rules significantly improved as people began to consider the financial consequences.
Ultimately, while increasing the minimum legal driving age is an important factor in ensuring road safety, a combination of strict regulations and this measure is the most effective way to reduce accidents and create safer roads.
