Some individuals question the necessity of an absolute prohibition on all means of advertisement. Personally, I partly disagree with this suggestion based on the drawbacks that it brings.
Advertising plays a vital role in business and economic growth. These days, businesses rely on advertising to raise awareness of their products to consumers, without this, many companies ,particularly small businesses, would struggle with competing against more well-known companies. It also provides valuable information to consumers, they rely on advertisements to make informed choices about the products and services they purchase. Without marketing, many would not notice improved innovation, making it difficult for businesses to create and launch new products. The advertising industry requires a large workforce, including graphic designers, video producers, media planners, resulting in significant financial losses, leading to widespread job loss.
Critics of advertising argue that it can manipulate consumer behavior or target vulnerable groups such as children. As kids have not established a complete sense of rationale, unhealthy or even inappropriate products fabricated by the art of visuals on promotions could potentially send them wrong messages and attract these mistargeted consumers. While these concerns are valid, they can be handled by stricter regulations rather than a complete ban. Specifically, governments can impose restrictions on misleading claims or limit certain types of content to children. These alternative measures minimize unnecessary harm and preserve the benefits of advertising.
In conclusion, while advertising has its drawbacks, a complete ban would lead to negative consequences for businesses, consumers and society as it remains a powerful tool for economic growth and delivers benefits for consumers when done responsibly. Instead, governments and industries should focus on implementing regulations to prevent unethical promotional practices.
