In times past, the youth would select their jobs based off of what their parents wanted them to do. There are still many instances where this is happening. I’m of the firm belief that children should make the decision as to what job is most suitable for them, even though others may not, especially their parents.
In most cases, parents want their offspring to have traditional jobs, making a comfortable salary, and to be well off enough so as not to need them later on in life. These include jobs in the fields of law, medicine, accounting and government services. While these jobs usually pay well, they are also tedious and very high stress, and if one doesn’t have a passion for it, they wouldn’t be happy. Career oriented decisions should be made by the person who is going to be doing the job, in my view.
When a young person chooses their career and subsequent path in life, it enhances self-reliance, leads to personal fulfillment, and in many cases, allows the individual to attain financial security and stability. In addition, doing a job that is rewarding and they love will lead to them bettering their opportunities for growth and development with their chosen career, as well as making a difference in other’s lives by being a role model.
To conclude, there are frank advantages and disadvantages to a parent determining their young ones jobs, but in the end, what truly matters is what the child wants. If a job is chosen for them that is not rewarding, or they don’t have a passion for, it will never work.
