Education is an important tool in achieving one’s purpose and dreams in life. Some people argue that young people should choose majors by themselves, while others say that parents should choose for them. In this essay, I would like to discuss both these views and present my own opinion.
Some people believe that youngsters should follow their parent’s advice. Parents always offer unconditional love and support to their offspring. They always desire to do the best thing for them and wish them success; therefore, they will help children to select a suitable career path. Additionally, parents used to face a lot of challenges, so they have enough experience and valuable lessons to teach and give advice for their child to choose a suitable major. Moreover, parents can understand children’s abilities and interests, so they can give some advice about strong points and weak points. Sometimes, parents encourage and desire their sons and daughters to follow their steps; from there, they can give practical navigation for the young’s future.
On the other hand, other people argue that young generations should decide on their own professions. After graduation from high school, adolescents have enough basic knowledge and awareness to choose an appropriate major for a bright future. Besides, they can also discover what they are interested in, their passions, and their talents. From there, they can understand which professions their abilities are suitable for. Furthermore, when young people self-select what they want and try new things, they will be ready to put effort into activities. Therefore, they will have more motivation to pursue dreams and learn how to be responsible for their options. From there, they can become more mature and independent.
I think that young people should choose their own major instead of parents choosing for them, because they understand what they are interested in and their ability. In addition, nowadays is very different from in the past, so a young person may understand the world better than their parents do and so make better decisions for their future.
In conclusion, young people of today are more independent, so they can make their own decisions about their professions; however, it is never a bad idea for a young person to ask their parents for advice, but the final decision should be made by them.
