“Life is like a bicycle. In order to not fall, you have to keep on moving.”
This is a quote by Albert Einstein, a renowed physicist who contributed to the science community. This quote suggests that whatever happens, time does now slow down for someone, and that they have to keep on moving. Therefore, not taking any risks is the ideal way for a life for people to keep going. I believe that taking gambles in both your private life and in your job is very disadvantageous, and massively outweighs the advantages, since not many individuals succeed.
First and foremost, I strongly am not in favor of taking gambles because most people are not able to strike gold in such cases. For example, when individuals take big risks in betting a great portion of their savings onto one gamble of money, there is a bigger chance that they’ll not be able to win. Consequently, the risk taker may affect not only their own living, but others, such as their spouse, as well. Without enough money, they wouldn’t be able to make a living, and if the only way to return to a normal life was to take risks, they might fall into a debt spiral if they lose. Because there is a greater chance of loss than victory, I believe that it is cardinal to not take risks.
However, some individuals might state that some great people in history were able to succeed because they took great risks. However, those people are trapped in a “survivorships bias”. A survivorships bias is when individuals only see the people who were able to succeed in one area, disregarding those who weren’t able to and ignoring them. For example, Albert Einstein performed poorly in school, getting horrendous grades in mathematics. Bill Gates dropped out of college. Elon Musk was considered as not smart by his teachers. However, they were naturally smart, and had enough ambition and perseverance to succeed. Taking risks, while it might succeed for people who have enough ambition and intelligence, is mostly fatal for individuals who want to become a bigshot.
In conclusion, I believe that the disadvantages are greater than the advantages since it mostly ends in failure and affects those around them negatively. Taking risks have worked wonders for some, and they were able to become well respected around the globe. However, that is not the case for everyone.
