The increasing disappearance of traditional customs and values thanks to technological advancement and modernization has raised questions about whether this development is beneficial overall. From my perspective, I believe that this phenomenon can bring certain noticeable drawbacks; however, its profound impacts on people’s lives should be objectively examined.
To begin with, the widespread use of modern technology and social media can accelerate the loss of cultural identity. As hi-tech gadgets such as smartphones become increasingly affordable, a larger proportion of people can easily access global trends online. While cultural integration may appear advantageous, it also creates certain risks of assimilation when users lack awareness of their own ethnic roots and traditions. For instance, many young individuals from ethnic minority communities in Vietnam have gradually adopted standard Vietnamese in daily communication instead of their native languages because social media platforms mainly operate in Vietnamese. Therefore, both indigenous languages and cultural identities are likely to disappear without timely and comprehensive preservation programs.
Nevertheless, the benefits of modernization and technological advancement are undeniable and should be properly acknowledged. Exposure to different cultures through social media can broaden people’s perspectives, improve general knowledge, and create opportunities to enhance living standards. Another positive consequence is the rise in literacy rates thanks to internet access, while local residents use online platforms to promote tourism and traditional products. This development has helped many communities operate successfully local businesses and improve their income. Particularly, Sin Suoi Ho and Vi Ro Ngheo are two of many community-based tourism villages in Vietnam which have effectively promoted their local culture through social media, becoming remarkable examples of overcoming hardship through tourism development and cultural promotion.
In summary, I believe that the erosion of traditional customs and ethnic identities represents a far more serious consequence, despite the educational and economic opportunities created by technology and globalization. For this reason, I think the disadvantages of this development can outweigh its advantages. It is therefore essential for both local communities and authorities to cooperate closely in raising cultural awareness and implementing long-term preservation policies to protect traditional values.
