The pie charts compare the percentage of energy use and gas emissions in Australian household.
Overall, while Australians mostly use energy for heating and water heating, the highest gas emissions are recorded in water heating and other appliances. Additionally, cooling requires the lowest energy, while it produces the least gas emissions at the same time.
In terms of energy use, heating and water heating account for three-quarters of total energy, (42% for the former and 30% for the latter). Other appliances rank third, with 15% energy, while refrigeration requires a half of energy other appliances use. Lighting and cooling show a comparatively lower proportion (4% and 2%, respectively).
Regarding greenhouse gas emissions, water heating and other appliances are the main contributors, with 32% and 28%, in turn. Heating and refrigeration’s contribution is relatively similar, at just over 15% for both, closely followed by lighting (8%). Finally, cooling has the lowest percentage at 3%.
