It is thought that the content on the internet is harmful, so the only way this could be fixed is by censoring the websites, containing unpleasant content by the goverment. Although this opinion may be true, I believe that this solution is not right for people’s freedom of speech,
Firstly, the internet is place in which anyone could upload whatever information they want to share with the public. It is people’s choice whether they want to consume this information or simply choose to ignore it. For example, there are a lot of people that are big fans of cats, at the same time there are people who hate cats. I have the freedom to write and talk about cats in the internet and if someone who is not a big fan of cats finds my blog – he can just skip it. If the goverment choses to censor my cat-blog how are they going to decide whether this content is harmful or not?
Secondly, there are a few examples of countries in which the goverment decides what information can be reached by the public and what should be censored and those countries are deffinetly not democratic. In Russia, for example, the goverment controlls all the internet and all the websites that can be reached. This deprives people of their freedom of reaching certain information.
In conclusion, I don’t think that the solution of the problem with harmful information online is by giving the government the power to decide whether we can reach it or not, because it creates the problem of freedom of speech and acquire certain content. Everyone has the freedom to ignore the information he decides is not for them.
