Band 8+: Young people often copy the behaviour of famous people, so celebrities should only be allowed to advertise healthy food or drink and should not encourage unhealthy habits such as smoking. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Celebrities often dominate the media and wield significant influence over young people. To prevent the promotion of unhealthy behaviors, some people argue that celebrities should not endorse harmful products or habits. I agree with this viewpoint.

It is true that this restriction may appear unfair to celebrities. Firstly, they may view it as an infringement on their personal liberty. In a free society, this right allows them to enter into any legal endorsement deals, even those that promote unhealthy products or habits. Moreover, celebrities are mere products of popular culture rather than arbiters of individual behavior. They only serve the public’s indulgences and do not have direct control over young people’s actions. Therefore, they should not be held accountable for the poor decisions young people make. For these reasons, this policy may constitute a legislative overreach that blurs the line between personal and external accountability.

Nevertheless, the influence of celebrities necessitates measured controls. While their personal liberty should be respected, their social responsibly should not be dismissed. When they glorify certain behaviors, many young people would blindly imitate, often oblivious to the harmful consequences. The rise in smoking among teenagers, for example, was proven to be directly fueled by the glamorous portrayals of smoking by movie stars on the silver screen. Moreover, while not immediately apparent, the negative ramifications of celebrity behavior are far reaching and unpredictable. Even wrongful behaviors, such as substance abuse, have become social norms in many Western societies. To avoid all of these negative effects on young people, celebrities should not be allowed to promote unhealthy behaviors.

In conclusion, I think celebrities should not be allowed to promote unhealthy behaviors. Such a control strike a balance between protecting young people from harmful influences and preserving the personal freedom of celebrities.
