Middle-aged and older people in several nations experience issues in obtaining good jobs although they are well-experienced. This issue is often referred to as “ageism” and unfortunately, I agree that the issue of ageism is prevalent in many countries.
In my opinion, several reasons may be attributed as the cause of this issue. First of all, many employers think that these individuals are not physically fit to work for many hours, either in front of a computer or in physically demanding roles such as machinery, mining, and so on. While I agree to some extent that older people are generally weaker, this statement cannot be generalized. Therefore, the best solution for this is to give them a chance and provide them a medical check-up. If they are deemed physically suitable for the job, then they should be given a chance to work.
Secondly, another factor causing this issue might be that some employers think that these people are over-qualified in terms of work experience. In turn, they could be a little difficult to control since they might know better. That being said, I do not think that this is the case for all of them. Everyone, regardless their age, might have a little bit of arrogance or stubbornness and this is why interview is important. By conducting thorough interview, employers will find out whether a person is a good team-player or not.
In summary, I believe that everyone should be given an equal chance of getting a job that can help them sustain their life. After all, living is a basic human right that people of all ages should be entitled to.
