It is often argued that having a small family is better than having a large family. In this essay, I will explain why the benefits of a small family overshadow the drawbacks.
On the one hand, having a small family could cause problems for children. Firstly, for kids who love a lively atmosphere, having a small family is not ideal. Especially if the parents only have a single kid, there is a chance the kid will feel bored most of the time because they do not have other siblings to talk to or make jokes with. In fact, the lack of interaction will make it hard to develop their social skills. Secondly, when the parents are already retired, they need to be taken care of. They need both money and moral support from their child but the fewer kids they have, the less support they can get. The kids also will have a burden to look after their parents alone because they do not have any siblings to share the responsibilities with.
On the other hand, despite these drawbacks, I would argue there are more benefits to this trend. The fewer kids that the parents have, the less money they need to spend on their kids. The parents will have less financial burden, which means they can fulfill the needs for kids such as their healthcare, education and food. In other words, lower living cost can improve their standard of living. Additionally, the parents also can pay more attention, give more affection and give more time to their kids without needing to split their focus among many kids. With this, the kids will feel like they are being loved and they will feel safe, so a deeper bond can be created for both the parents and the kids. This bond will make the children feel comfortable enough to have courage and share what they feel, including their personal problems. This is the stage in which the parents can get more involved and help children solve their problems, both in academic and non-academic aspects.
In conclusion, while having a small family could possibly lead the kids to have difficulty developing their social skills and have more burdens when they grow up, they have a chance to have a better standard of living and get more affection from their parents. Therefore, I am fully convinced that the demerits are eclipsed by the merits.
