Band 6+: Some people thick that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true functions of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. What , in your opinion, should be the main function of a university

What should be the true role of university? Is it to provide sufficient knowledge for the sake of acquiring information or to make students’ equip with suitable skills and practical knowledge in workplace? In my perspective, universities should be able to develop in-depth knowledge on the subjects as well as be able to nurture students to be the potential candidates in jobs.

Admittedly, the primary aim of the educational institutions is to provide sufficient information on the subjects of study, as it opens up wide range of opportunities rather than a particular field. Students get to know various aspects of the subject, and be able to choose the path they have to follow in future. Consequently, each and every workplace will have people who have fervent interest in the kind of work that is taking place over there and will be able to broaden the spectrum of ideas and views. For instance, a person who does not have enough knowledge on the atmosphere will not be able to work efficiently in meteorology department, leading to undesirable effects. Moreover, it helps in understanding how past activities have affected the present world, and aids in preventing harmful results not to be repeated in the welcoming future.

Apparently, certain skills and practices should be gained in the educational institutions for the students to find job at ease soon after their studies. Most of the employers are reluctant to hire freshers with the fear of economical loss. In their opinion, allowing newbies to take part in the major project is a waste of time and energy, as they will never be able to complete the assigned task on time. As a result, newly graduated students will have a hard time finding a job, and thus earn their living. Reportedly, 90% of the individuals, who are unemployed are the students without are prior experiences.

In my earnest reflection, universities should be able to develop the practical skills, in addition evoking interest in the subject. Both are necessary for shaping their career. However, giving an overly emphasis of a particular criterion will cause the deterioration.
