Several individuals hold a view that internet has been a key invention to bring about a sense of connectivity and closeness in society, while others argue that people and communities are more isolated. I agree with the latter because of the widespread of social media usage has severely impacted our ability to physically socialise and the ill effects of the internet have overshadowed the benefits.
The ease of adoption and reduced latency of communication over longer distances were the key aspects that popularized internet. It connected people across the world and messages that took weeks, were delivered in seconds. This helped humans to exchange ideas and thoughts at a much quicker pace. Families could stay in touch with their loved ones and businesses could go multi-national. For example, IT outsourcing boom in the 90’s that helped the USA to export a large portion of its operation to india wouldn’t have been possible without internet.
In present times, as we see a drastic shift in internet usage, the negative impacts seem to emerge quite evidently. Whether its scrolling through endless feed on numerous social media apps or binge watching online webseries, the consequences seem detrimental. Especially the younger generation who have a very high screen time suffer from various physical and psyhcologal aliments. A recent study found that people that the attention span of the present generation has been reduced by 41% when compared to a decade ago. The lack of physical conversations for a prolonged duration deprives us of our need to socialise, that was once a coner-stone of human bonding.
In conclusion, Although internet proved to be a great tool in bridging continents, its bad influence on the younger generation is undeniably significant. What was once a boon has now turned into our enemy.
