The use of plastic containers by food and beverage companies has become ubiquitous in recent years. Although this trend offers some advantages, in terms of cost-effectiveness and consumer convenience, I firmly believe that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits due to damage to biodiversity. Moreover, microplastics pose a risk to people’s health.
One of the most significant drawbacks of using plastic containers is their adverse impact on biodiversity. People often dispose of plastic in rivers to eliminate it. However, this technique can be directly harmful to ecosystems. For example, when plastics end up in the rivers or oceans, they can affect marine life, as fish or seabirds eat plastics for food by mistake, which can lead to injury or even death of marine animals. In fact, in the USA, there is an island where plastic waste has accumulated, and this island is larger than France. Consequently, many species are now at risk of extinction due to plastic waste.
Another significant concern is the threat that plastic containers pose to human health. Over time, larger plastics can break down into smaller particles known as microplastics. These minuscule particles are ingested by marine life and eventually make their way into the human food chain through seafood consumption. As a result, it can lead to cancer and various diseases among people. Additionally, burning or incinerating plastic waste can release toxic fumes and particulate matter into the air. Inhaling these pollutants may lead to respiratory problems, exacerbate existing conditions like asthma, and contribute to air pollution-related health issues. For example, on the highway before the entrance of Tashkent located burning area where plastic waste has been burned and has become toxic around the villages. Therefore, the widespread use of plastic not only causes environmental issues but also a serious health concern that affects inhabitants worldwide. In conclusion, although plastic containers have certain advantages, including cost efficiency and convenience for consumers, I firmly believe that their negative aspects outweigh the benefits, as they pose significant threats to biodiversity and human health.
