Band 8+: You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Individuals can do nothing to improve the environment; only governments and large companies can make a difference. To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.

The debate surrounding the role of individuals versus that of governments and large corporations in improving the environment is a contentious one. While some argue that individual efforts are significant, I largely concur with the perspective that only governments and large companies possess the necessary resources and influence to effect substantial environmental change.

A primary advantage that governments and large corporations hold over individual citizens lies in the vast array of resources and facilities at their disposal. These entities benefit from significant financial backing, which enables them to implement comprehensive policies aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability. For instance, governments can enforce strict regulations against practices such as marine dumping or establish nationwide educational campaigns that promote awareness about critical environmental issues. Such initiatives are often beyond the reach of individual efforts and can lead to far-reaching improvements in environmental quality.

Moreover, public trust in governmental and corporate bodies plays a crucial role in their ability to enact environmental reforms. Citizens tend to rely on these larger entities, believing that they have both the power and responsibility to safeguard the environment. For example, families are more likely to place their trust in the actions of their government or established corporations rather than in the initiatives of unknown individuals attempting to implement environmental protections. This trust is cultivated through the consistent enforcement of successful environmental legislation and visible improvements in public spaces.

In conclusion, I assert that larger corporations and governments are better equipped, both in terms of resources and public confidence, to tackle environmental challenges. While individual contributions are valuable, they pale in comparison to the systemic changes that can be enacted by more significant entities. Therefore, it is imperative that we look to these powerful institutions to lead the way in creating a sustainable future.
