The graph shows trends in shop closures and new shop openings in an unnamed country over a seven-year period. In general, the number of shops being closed remained mainly in the range between 5000 and 7000 (with the exception of 2015), while shop openings showed a wider range of figures over the same period.
In terms of new shops being opened, a generally downward trend is indicated over the years in question. The figure dropped dramatically from 9000 in 2011 to around 4000 in 2012 before steadily increasing to just above 6000 in 2013. In 2015, the number of shop openings fell again to the 2012 level but remained stable at around 4000 in the next two years. The last recorded year, 2018, saw a further fall to 3000 new openings, the lowest point in seven years.
In 2011, around 6400 shops were closed down. The number of closures fluctuated over the next four years prior to a steep drop to just below 1000 in 2015. Following a drastic increase to approximately 5000 in 2016, the figure plateaued in the last two years in question.
