Technology has brought about important developments in several fields of life such as communications, medicine and transport over the past decades. Some would argue that despite the advantages, the heavy dependence on computer technology poses a threat to society. I agree with this notion to some extent, although I believe that modern technology have caused more good than harm so far.
First of all, the fear of technology is not baseless. As several areas of life have become automatised, many tasks previously carried out by humans, have lost their meaning. For instance, post offices will soon become a thing of the past, as nowadays email communication takes precendence over written correspondence. Some would say that surgeons and bus drivers will also find themselves out of job in the near future if robots are able to take their places. The list is endless. Secondly, computer systems are not always reliable, they can easily be hacked. If hackers were able to manipulate the traffic light network, for example, they could cause numerous road accident at the same time.
On the other hand, opponents of computer technology often prepare for the worst case scenario. They base their opinions on sci-fi novels and movies, which tend to paint a dark picture of the future and dismiss the countless advantages mankind can thank for computer-based technology. Life would be unimaginable without mobile phones, traffic lights and GPS these days while medical research and robotic surgery is also reliant on computer technology.
In conclusion, several inventions that have made our life easier are the result of technological development. Although I consider computer technology a dangerous master, at the moment I still view it as a good servant of humanity.
