The bar chart illustrates the proportion of fuel consumed in the transport sector across six different EU nations and the EU average between 2009 and 2010.
Overall, there was an increase in the percentage of petrol consumption for the transport sector in Italy, France, and Greece, while a reverse trend was observed in the remaining countries and the EU average, except for Austria, whose figure remained unchanged throughout the period. Additionally, Slovakia was the leading fuel consumer, whereas Greece was the least.
Regarding the countries following the decreasing trend, Slovakia dominated fuel consumption in the transport sector over the period, starting at 8.8% in 2009, approximately 3 percentage points higher than the EU average, and doubling that in Spain, at 6% and 3.8% respectively. By 2010, the proportions of fuel used in transportation in all three categories had fallen, with Slovakia dropping remarkably to 6.5%, while the EU average and Spain saw a more modest decline, ending at 5% and 3%, respectively.
Moving on to the remaining countries, Italy and France recorded a slight upward trend, rising from 4.5% in 2009 to 5.1% in 2010, and from 3.7% to 4.3%, respectively. Similarly, despite having the lowest figures over the period, Greece experienced a remarkable increase, from 1,1% to exactly 2%. Conversely, the percentage of fuel usage in Austria stayed unchanged over the period, at 5.1% in both years.
