The pie chart compares the proportion of people who use visit public libraries for different reasons in the UK in 1991 and 2000.
Overall, the total number of library visits remained unchanged in both years. It can be seen that borrowing and returning books was always the most popular purpose over the period while obtaning information was more common in 2000. Meanwhile, borrowing and returning videos was not recorded as a reason in 1991 but emerged as a notable purpose for visiting libraries in 2000.
In term of increased reasons, the figure for obtaining the information significantly rose double to 20%, compared to just 10% in 1991. More notably, borrowing and returning videos was not exist in the first pediod but accounted for 18% of visits in 2000, becoming the popular reason.
Regarding the remaining purposes, borrowing and returning books was always the dominant reason in both years although there was a slight fall, from 65% to 55%. Meanwhile, the figure for reading newspapers or magazines dropped dramatically, at just 5% in 2000. Similarly, study recorded as the least common reason, significantly falling from 10% to just 2%.
