The two charts compare the proportions of online sales derived from four major sectors in South America between 2009 and 2019.
Overall, the percentages of sales generated from travel products or services and clothes decreased, while the reverse was true for the contribution of books and film/music.
In 2009, the major sector of travel displayed a top figure on online sales, accounting for 38% of the overall figure. Another 26% was generated thanks to the sales of clothes, while around one-fifth was contributed by selling music and film products. Although the online sales of books contributed the least to the entire sector, with 16%, this figure was still substantially large compared to the three other segments.
Regarding the percentages of online sales in 2019, travel sector fell to 29% and was overpassed by the share of music and film products, which accounted for approximately a third and was the highest share in that period. In addition, the sale of clothes on the virtual platforms decreased drastically just over a tenth. In contrast, the proportion of books saw a slight rise, taking up 23% in 2019.
