The charts provided demonstrate the variations in the number of values of total UK demand, UK production, import, and the number of employment statuses in the UK steel industry over a time span 3 decades.
Overall, it is evident that the figure for total UK demand was the highest over the time surveyed. Moreover, while the data for import saw an upward trend, the adverse tendency was true for the categories.
Looking at the first graph, starting with 200 thousand and around 152 thousand respectively in the first year, both the figures for total demand and production plunged significantly to around 100 thousand and 80 thousand correspondingly by 1990. Both data then remained unchanged for the rest of the period. However, the amount of steel which was imported increased constantly to approximately 50 thousand from 1970 to 1980. This number then remained stable in the next one decade. this was followed by a further rise of 50 thousand.
on the other hand, there were striking differences in the data for employment status. To be more specific, with 50 thousand in the first year, the number of employment status decreased dramatically to around 18 thousand in 2000. The most significant decline in employment occurred between 1970 and 1990.
