Overall, students spent almost half of their expenditure on rent and around 80 percent of students use student loan to cover their monthly cost.
In 2016, students in the UK spent 385 pounds on their monthly rent, which accounted for nearly half in the total cost. Followed by 124 pounds spent on food and 91 pounds for doing other things. Other aspects in which students spent the most were paying bills, socialising and travelling. Every month, students spent 69 pounds paying for bills and 64 pounds for taking part in social events. There were also 52 pounds used monthly to cover travelling.
In terms of sources of student income, around 80 percent of students used loan, which was followed by family financial support, accounting for about 70 percent. Taking part-time job as an income source was also a method used by little less than 70 percent of total students investigated in 2016, ranking in the third place in the chart. There were also about 40 percent of students having savings to cover their monthly cost, which was closely followed by bank overdraft. The least used way to make up for the cost was grants and funding, which was little less than 40 percent of total student numbers.
