The following graphs show the most preferred sport activities in schools in France in 1990, 2000 and 2010.
Overall, it is clear that swimming was the most popular sport across the period. Figure of basketball witnessed a dramatic growth at the end of the period while football plummeted in a half.
To begin, swimming was the most preferred by the students throughout the period, sharing 39% of popularity in 1990, sharing almost the half of preference in 2000 and eventually falling to 41%. Regarding basketball, its share experienced a dramatic decline from 16% in 1990 to 7% in 2000 before soaring to a 25% in the end.
Turning to the popularity of football, it saw a dramatic fall from 16% in 1990 to 8% in 2010. As regards to tennis, its percentage also increased dramatically from 4% in 2000 to 7% in 2010. Other activities declined relatively modestly sharing one fourth of preference in 1990, 23% in 2000 and eventually made up 19% of popularity in 2010.
