Overall,both genders showed an upward trend over the given period.In addition,the proportion of males smokers was almost always as high as that of females between 1970 and 1985 and in 2000, whereas from 1990 to 1995, the percentage of smokers in females was higher than that of males.
In 1970,the proportion of smokers in males was 10%,almost 2 times as much as that of females.From 1970 to 1985, the percentage of males rose significantly by 27%, which climbed from nearly 10% to 37% in 15 years and reached its highest percentage.At the same time,there was a considerable increase of 29 % in the proportion of smokers in females.
Similarly, there was a gradual decrease in smoking rates for both males and females from 1990 to 2000. By 2000, the percentage of male smokers dropped to 28%, while female smokers decreased to 27%.
